The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research announced that the Iraqi universities have made significant progress in rankings related to global academic reputation and indicators of sustainable development (SDGs).
Higher Education highlighted that ten Iraqi universities achieved significant scores in the QS World University Rankings 2026, which competed against more than 1,500 universities from around the world, the University of Baghdad obtained the score 741-750, Al-Nahrain University obtained the score 951-1000, Mustansiriyah University and Anbar University obtained the score 1001-1200 and the universities of Tishk International, Babylon, Basrah, Karbala, Kufa and Mosul obtained the score 1201-1400.
Higher Education demonstrated that this ranking is based on a methodology based on academic reputation by (30%), employer reputation by (15%), student-to-faculty members ratio by (10%), number of research citations by (20%), international faculty members ratio by (5%), international students by (5%), international research network by (5%), employment outcomes by (5%), and sustainability by (5%).
Conversely, the results of the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings 2025 showed a significant presence for Iraq, with (88) Iraqi universities participating in this ranking, these ranking measures the contribution and impact of university institutions in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through indicators covering the areas of scientific research, institutional governance, community engagement and education.
It is worth to be mentioned Iraq achieved an accomplishment, with Al-Mustaqbal University obtained the first globally in Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), making it among the top universities according to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
