During a press conference, His Excellency, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Naeem Abd Yaser Al-Aboudi announced that three sites within the Tuwaitha complex, southeast of the capital, Baghdad are free of any radioactive contamination.
Dr. Al-Aboudi reviewed that the sites being treated are the French Lama Laboratories, the Italian Radioisotope Production Facility and the Tammuz 2 Nuclear Research Reactor.
His Excellency emphasized that these sites have undergone comprehensive radiation surveys according to precise scientific methodologies and national partnerships with relevant institutions, as well as the sites are free of any radioactive waste that could pose a threat to public health.
Dr. Al-Aboudi also announced the imminent signing of an agreement with the China Atomic Energy Corporation regarding the laying of the foundation stone for the first subcritical training reactor in Iraq.
His Excellency highlighted that it is an educational project aimed at developing the skills of students and researchers in the fields of nuclear physics and peaceful radiation technologies.
