College of Education for Pure Sciences, University of Wasit discussed a master dissertation on the role of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) gene in predisposing patients to hypertension by the postgraduate student, Ms. Zahraa Suwayh Ghulam.

The dissertation reviewed demonstrating the potential role of genetic variations in the glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) gene, specifically the rs713041 polymorphism, in determining susceptibility to hypertension and its impact on antioxidant capacity, as measured by serum GPX4 levels.

The dissertation demonstrated that impaired antioxidant defense, which may be affected by genetic polymorphisms in GPX4, could contribute to the development of hypertension.

The dissertation concluded that the T allele in the rs713041 polymorphism in GPX4 represents a genetic risk factor for hypertension, particularly in males, while the C allele may offer protection and support the observed reduction in serum GPX4 levels in hypertensive patients.
