College of Science, Al-Nahrain University discussed a master dissertation on the calculation of calcium concentrations in the human body to identify osteoporosis using LIBS and XRF techniques by the postgraduate student, Ms. Maryam Faris Khalil.
The dissertation reviewed employ laser-induced plasma spectroscopy (LIBS) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) techniques to measure calcium concentrations in human nails and compare them with the results of the DEXA scan, a medically approved method for diagnosing osteoporosis.
The dissertation demonstrated the potential for combining these techniques with the DEXA scan to provide an easy and non-invasive method for early detection of osteoporosis, paving the way for the adoption of alternative or complementary methods for medical diagnosis.
