College of Science at the University of Kirkuk discussed a Ph.D. thesis on the levels of several physiological and biochemical variables as early indicators in the diagnosis of gestational diabetes by the postgraduate student, Ms. Marwa Jassim Muhammad.
The thesis highlighted the impact of various factors, such as
obesity, insulin resistance, lipids, iron, ferritin, immune and hormonal
indicators, and oxidative stress factors, on the early detection of gestational
diabetes mellitus (GDM).
The thesis addressed the diagnostic and prognostic value of a group
of biomarkers, such as C-peptide, MDA, cortisol, resistin, tryptophan and
others, using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.
The thesis concluded that immune and hormonal indicators, and
oxidative stress factors, contribute effectively to the early diagnosis of
gestational diabetes and the prediction of its risks to the mother and fetus.
