College of Pharmacy, Mustansiriyah University discussed a master dissertation on the design and evaluation of a prodrug for 2-methylbenzimidazole-1 derivatives as new anti-lung cancer compounds by the postgraduate student, Ms. Maryam Saeb Jassim.
The dissertation aimed at designing new compounds of 2-methylbenzimidazole-1 and evaluating the anti-cancer activity of these compounds against lung cancer cells.
The dissertation reviewed the use of the GOLD program to determine the compounds' ability to act as selective inhibitors. Molecular dynamics simulations were conducted using the Schrödinger program to analyze structural stability and interaction mechanisms at the atomic level, biological evaluations of the anti-lung cancer compound IVd showed promising efficacy, clearly outperforming the drug erlotinib when tested on lung cancer cells, while the other compounds showed moderate efficacy.
The dissertation concluded the successful preparation of the designed compounds, and the accurate confirmation of their chemical structures using advanced analytical techniques, including infrared (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H-NMR), ADME studies also showed that all compounds have good absorption through the gastrointestinal tract, indicating the possibility of their oral bioavailability, as well as the results of laboratory tests, which confirm that the prepared compounds represent a promising therapeutic candidate for the treatment of lung cancer in the future.
